Torture in the 'Land of Cendrawasih'This book is a result of research done by Kemitraan in cooperation with LBH (Legal Aid Institute) Jakarta, LBH Papua and several local CSOs in Papua. One of the conclusions of the book is that there are still widespread torture in Papua done by law enforcers, either in the process of arresting and investigation by the police, detainment by the public prosecutors office, also when serving the sentence in prison by the wardens. The respondents of the research consist of law enforcers (police, public prosecutors, judges), victims of torture (suspects, defendants, convicts) and the general public (adat leaders, eligious leaders, university students, journalists, human rights activists, and prominent leaders). This book explains in details the definition of torture according to the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (UNCAT), method to measure torture, the research methodology, Torture Tolerance Index in Papua and results as well as recommendation of the research. Recommendations are to include providing education and legal and human rights assistance to the people so they understand their rights and obligation as citizens protected by the constitution. Recommendation for law enforcers is the need to review all legal framework and internal policies so that there are no more loopholes for the members to carry out torture.

Designing a democratic political systemIndonesia’s political system has yet to fulfil the people’s mandate and the Constitution. In response to this, Kemitraan has developed a democratic electoral advocacy series, consisting of three components; Electoral Systems, Electoral Management, and Electoral Law Enforcement. Designing a Democratic Political System is the title of the first Electoral System component. This book presents the following argument: 1. The Constitution mandates a democratic political system to be implemented by the state administration, 2. The Constitution does not specify all necessary democratic political mechanisms, and 3. These democratic political mechanisms need to be complemented with laws and regulations, and amendment of the Constitution, where necessary. Designing a Democratic Political System then provides the precriptions and indicators for a democratic system: political participation, political party systems, political representation systems, and effective presidential and local government. The conclusion outlines ways to design a more democratic system, including recommendations for the general election process for both parliament and local council members. -
Kampong people against corruption“The people featured in Kampong people Against Corruption are providing power from the the bottom and are blessed in all their efforts. If this power is united with KPK, then the noble task of fighting corruption will become a faith that gives this hard work real meaning.” (Mohamad Sobary) This book is a collection of real experiences of kampong people who have taken action rather than watch their regions being destroyed by massive corruption. The stories are organised into four groups: corruption in the mining and natural resources sector, corruption in public services (health, education, local budgets, law enforcement), education and awareness raising, and promotion and monitoring of STRANAS PK 2010-2015. This book was produced by Kemitraan with 15 local partners: UBINUS Jakarta, MTI Jakarta, PuKat UGM Yogyakarta, Gasak Aceh, Sahdar Medan, Lakpesdam NU Sumatera Utara, Walhi, Lembaga Titian Pontianak, Raca Institute Jakarta, KP2KKN Jawa Tengah, Sidak Yogyakarta, Punden Nganjuk, LPS HAM Sulawesi Tengah, LBH Makassar and LBH Kendari. -
Students against corruptionThis book is a collection of essays from the writing competition organised by Kemitraan and Masyarakat Transparansi Indonesia (MTI). Corruptors are the Nation’s Termites, Corruption: National Moral Destroyer, Corruption: an Insult to Pancasila, and Corruption Kills the People” are several titles of the essays which describe the low morality of the corruptors, and the moral decline of entire constituencies which are seen as eventually eroding state sovereignty. These young authors feel that they cannot ignore the situation. Essays like Destroy Corruption Walls, Battle Against CORRUPTION!, and Eradicate Corruption? Teenagers can Also Act, are cries for action by the young. Other essays like, Corruption? No Way!, Young People as Anti Corruption Agents are commitments to become anti corruption ambassadors. The main objective of this book is to promote the anti corruption movement to the next generation and to build broad based support for action.
