“The robust methodology (drawing from both objective data sources and interviews with a diversity of stakeholders), and the participatory assessment process, are excellent illustrations of how the key principles of ‘national ownership’ and ‘country contextualization’ underlying UNDP’s approach to governance assessments can help secure uptake of results: the Index provides a critical accountability mechanism for government and citizens to engage on governance issues and voice their opinions, and the data produced by the assessment offers a superior evidence base for decision-making by provincial governments, and for benchmarking progress”.
