Democratic Governance
Goal: To enhance the capacity of political, social and economic actors in order to build institutional checks and balances relevant to legislative capacity, policy-making, civil society representation and elections.
Achieving the correct balance between state, market, and civil society actors, requires the institutionalisation of consultation with all stakeholders. While Indonesia’s legislative bodies - including both the DPR and the MPR - have the power to introduce new laws and make amendments to existing ones, implemention is subject to interpretation by the state agencies responsible for enforcement. A greater degree of consultation is needed to ensure that new laws are implemented in the manner in which they were intended. This process requires high levels of transparency and communication between legislatures, the bureaucracy and civil society.
The DEG’s programs aim to strengthen the capacity of stakeholders and processes to instill democratic principles at all levels. Efforts to consolidate and revitalize Indonesia’s democratic politics, processes and institutions are currently focused on six priority areas:
- Increased civic engagement in public policy making
- Citizen’s empowerment in democratic politics
- Institutional transformation of the national and regional legislatures
- Increasing the integrity and governance of electoral systems
- Increased democratic governance of political parties;
- Building a vigilant and independent media sector.
- Public Service Governance
- Democratic Governance
- Security and Justice Governance
- Economic and Environmental Governance
