Kemitraan together with National Council for Climate Change (DNPI) has launched a movie on climate change titled “Lakukan Sekarang Juga!” or “Do It Now!” on September 10th 2009 at Blitz Grand Indonesia, Jakarta. This 30-minutes duration documentary movie will be used as a media to communicate climate change issue to Indonesian public.
The lack of awareness and understanding shared by the majority of Indonesian regarding climate change issues has encouraged the making of this film according to DNPI’s Communication, Information, and Education division coordinator Amanda Katili Niode. She further stated that only 44% of Indonesians consider climate change as an essential issue. The film production has begun since the first quarter in 2009 through a joint effort by Kemitraan and DNPI.
During the discussion sessions after the film screening, Kemitraan and DNPI explained to the public that this film launching is only an initial step in their efforts to disseminate climate change issues to the Indonesian public. Both organizations has stated their commitment to follow up this activity towards all related parties ranging from Government institute to communities throughout the regions.
In the event, Professor in Environmental Management ITB, Surna Tjahja Djajadiningrat expressed that beside dissemination, the need for educating individuals since their early years should be implemented in the national education curriculum. The development of community awareness on climate change certainly could not be materialized in a short length of time, therefore the learning process should be done during an early age, Surna concluded.
On the same note with Amanda and Surna, Head of University Indonesia ‘s Social Development Masters Program Paulus Wirutomo also stated his concern on the low level of the Indonesian people’s awareness on climate change. This issue must be understood by most Indonesian.
Adeline Tiffanie Suwana, Indonesia’s Delegation for Tunza International Children’s Conference UNEP, thought that this climate change film as the best of its kind in Indonesia.
